The Importance of the Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was a very important part of history because it was considered to be the first large movement for African American artists, authors and musicians. It was the first time that African Americans were receiving high appraisal from serious critics and it was a huge explosion of African American culture. The Harlem Renaissance was the first time that White Americans and other African Americans began to appreciate African American art, music and literature. The Harlem Renaissance began in 1919 when African Americans began to move North from their Southern homes to more populated urban cities. Two conferences were held in Greenwich Village and Harlem, which at the time were called literary discussions, but are now known as the first New African American Movement.
